What could be the reason(s) behind a higher prevalence of acute malnutrition among PBW compared to children 6-59months - based on mass MUAC screening, in emergency humanitarian response settings. I have seen this in the Tigray response and now initial findings (not yet validated/officially circulated) in the Gaza response
In emergency humanitarian settings, the higher prevalence of acute malnutrition among Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women (PBW) compared to children aged 6-59 months can be attributed to increased nutritional needs due to pregnancy and lactation, limited access to sufficient and diverse food, and prioritization of food resources for children. PBW often face greater challenges in accessing adequate nutrition and healthcare, and socioeconomic hardships can further exacerbate their nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, health complications and higher nutrient demands during pregnancy and breastfeeding contribute to their increased vulnerability.
