Description
The Senior Nutrition Director is responsible for the overall strategic development, implementation, monitoring and accountability of Save the Children’s work in nutrition. The Senior Nutrition Director (Nutrition Team Leader) works in collaboration with the Vice President of Global Health, Associate Vice President of Global Health and the Global Health Senior Leadership Team members to define the strategic direction, ensure program quality, identify and seek funding opportunities, and guide the Department of Global Health’s (DGH) efforts to achieve results at scale. The Senior Director is a key member of the DGH Senior Leadership Team and plays a leadership role in advancing all nutrition work in support of the Agency’s strategic plan. At the global level, the Senior Director will also serve as a key advocate and spokesperson for nutrition on behalf of Save the Children. The incumbent will lead a team of technical advisors and specialists to ensure program quality; oversee program learning and innovation; lead global and in-country advocacy and policy initiatives; collaborate effectively and mobilize resources towards objectives of improved nutrition.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact

Strategic vision, leadership, and planning (25%)
- In consultation with the VP DGH, AVP DGH and other key agency stakeholders, define agency maternal and child nutrition strategy, direction, and objectives
-Lead nutrition strategic and operational planning, monitor and measure performance, and ensure progress against established objectives
-Provide leadership and oversight to ensure that the maternal and child nutrition programs are applying state-of-the-art approaches and delivering high quality programs to achieve increased use of nutrition services and practices at scale at the country and global level
-Develop strategies and relationships with country offices and staff that build capacity to design and deliver quality programs
-Monitor and report upon progress made in relation to the goals and objectives, both at the global and country level, including or overseeing the preparation of new funding applications

Technical leadership and support for quality nutrition programs (20%)
-Serve as internal and external expert on nutrition and represents SC at global fora including workshops, conferences and meetings
-Provide and facilitate SC US nutrition technical leadership to the health and nutrition global theme.
-Provide leadership role in shaping and supporting the agency wide commitment to nutrition policies and programs worldwide across all four strategies reflected in our "theory of change,"
-Work with other Business Team members, DGH staff, to identify and pursue opportunities for "mainstreaming" nutrition into other agency programs
-Lead agency-wide efforts to build capacity in the design and delivery of sustainable, high impact, and quality nutrition programs (both HQ and Field) with the aim of reducing chronic malnutrition and acute malnutrition
-Lead development and agency-wide application of evidence-based program standards, guidance, and tools that reflect global best practice, and promote widespread application and use of these standards and tools
-Provide technical leadership to ensure programs are of high quality and develop new state of the art approaches
-Influence policymakers both in the US and other donor countries, within multilateral development institutions, and in developing countries on matters related to nutrition and contribute to development of global nutrition programming standards

Promote program learning and innovation (10%)
-Lead agency efforts to define and provide oversight and direction to efforts to design, test, and evaluate new approaches to advance nutrition programming
-Monitor new developments and identify operations research needs and opportunities within DGH and nutrition programs at country and regional levels
-Identify innovative field-based nutrition best practices; oversee documentation; and promote uptake within and outside Save the Children

Advocacy (10%)
-In collaboration with the Public Policy and Advocacy team and other SC US and SCI stakeholders lead development of nutrition-related policy and advocacy positions, and support their dissemination

Resource Mobilization from public and private sources (20%)
-Provide leadership to identify and pursue new opportunities in nutrition and develop long-term funding strategies for nutrition
-In collaboration with the AVP DGH, define nutrition-related priorities for private fundraising, and work with the Resource Development Team to achieve agreed upon objectives
-Develop and sustain donor and partner relationships, including relationships with academic institutions and technical personnel in UN Agencies, among others

Human Resource Management (15%)
-Provides management oversight, working closely with the AVP DGH, including headquarters, regional, and country-based staff. This includes recruitment, mentoring, supervision and routine portfolio and performance reviews
-Serve as the primary point of contact between the Department of Global Health and the Hunger and Livelihoods Business Teams and manage team to collaborate with other departments, as necessary
-Provide technical oversight of centrally-managed nutrition awards and ensure funding for HO based staff is incorporated into nutrition related proposals
-Serve on the DGH Senior Leadership Team and undertake department level responsibilities as assigned
-Attract and retain high quality nutrition technical advisors, and support the growth of interested development oriented advisors

Required Background and Experience, Skills and Behaviors
-Strong Level of Technical and/ or Managerial knowledge, skills, and experience to lead a Unit or Team, or provide the technical advice, guidance and direction related to various size programs and grants. Minimum 15 -20 years' experience required in area of expertise.
-MD/MPH, MS, or PhD (health sciences), or equivalent experience in public health and nutrition.
-Minimum of 10 years of experience in international nutrition and public health programming in developing countries, with emphasis on maternal or child nutrition, including at least 5 years working in developing countries
-Experience in leading or managing a major nutrition program that addresses the development of state of the art practices.
-Experience delivering technical assistance, especially in developing country settings
-Proven record of creating a vision and establishing criteria for making strategic programming decisions.
-Able to develop and apply monitoring and evaluation plans to determine program results and monitor impact.
-Strong record of fostering new and effective partnerships on an international level
-Successful experience managing staff
-Able to develop and oversee implementation of strategic advocacy agenda and plans.
-Able to play lead role in development of effective and responsive project proposals,
-Knowledge of USAID and other donor policies, strategies, and program priorities,
-Experience overseeing technical quality of programs integrating nutrition into maternal and child health, food security/livelihoods and HIV/AIDS
-Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively in a team situation, and in cross-cultural settings.
-Explains and demonstrates, provides feedback and reinforcement. Aligns performance for success, builds trust, delegates responsibility, and coaches.
-English fluency and strong writing skills.
