It came to my attention recently that my organization accepted a donation of BMS in excess of what our small needs are. We have approximately 100 cans of powdered milk that has expired (Oct 2013). Can this be used for anything or must it be destroyed? The only options we seem to have are for it to be used as animal feed or burned. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
We are going to be refreshing our staff on our policy regarding accepting donations of infant formula.
Dear Ellen
I wouldn't use it for anything involving feeding humans, especially infants and children or older people - not worth the risk. Animal feed, like you say, is an option or destruction. Although I am sure you are concerned about the waste of food, that responsibility should lie with the donor so I wouldn't angst about it. Good move to use it as a lesson internally, and thanks for sharing this.
