My name is Adam Hardi. I am currently working at the Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta region of Ghana. I am also a postgraduate student studying Master of Public Health (Nutrition) at the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health, University of Health and Allied Sciences.
In recent times, the Volta region of Ghana has been faced with emergencies predominantly floods due to the rising levels of the Akosombo dam. Working as a nutritionist in the teaching hospital of the region, I have been privileged to embark on an emergency response to mitigate the destruction caused by these emergencies. Often times we work with other emergency response teams, such as the National Disaster Management Organizations (NADMO), to conduct rapid nutrition and health assessments as well as the distribution of aid to the affected communities. A typical example is the recent flooding that occurs in the Mepe, Sogakope, and Mafi in the Volta region.
Having been privileged to be taught by renowned personalities such as Prof. Francis Zotor and Prof. Paul Amuna, among others, I strongly believe that coordination, collaboration, and research are integral tools needed to mitigate emergencies. I am a stern advocate for good nutrition and health, especially among the vulnerable.
In summary, a coordinated system approach is needed to solve Africa's nutrition and health problems. That is, the inclusion of all sectors, such as agriculture and education. The security and also the community members are crucial toward an effective battle against malnutrition and illness. The inclusion of the government and relevant stakeholders, such as the NGOs and the media, can improve the quality of life across the continent.
