A strategic partnership between WorldFish and Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has created an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to support our work in nutrition-related research. Under the guidance of our Scientist, you will lead nutrition-related research and project activities in the Pacific Region (Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Timor Leste), in particular, with respect to nutrition-sensitive aquatic agricultural food systems and fish for improved nutrition in the first 1000 days of life.

Success is measured in the delivery of the following key outcomes:
• Effective leadership and coordination of research and project activities related to nutrition-sensitive linkages to fish production systems, food systems and fish for improved nutrition in the Pacific Region.
• Strengthened capability and capacity of WorldFish staff in Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and project staff in Vanuatu on the linkages between fish production systems and the benefits of fish for improved nutrition and health, especially for women and children in the first 1000 days life.
• Contribute effectively to monitoring and evaluation, design and implementation, data analyses and interpretation of data with respect to nutrition-sensitive aquatic food systems research activities.
• Lead and contribute to the publication of peer-reviewed papers, WorldFish reports and communication products with respect to nutrition-sensitive aquatic food systems research.
• Together with WorldFish staff, design and write project proposals which include nutrition-sensitive aquatic food systems approaches for funding opportunities.
• Work in close collaboration with relevant staff of the Governments of Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Timor Leste, national and international research institutions, NGOs and funding agencies.
• Assist in initiatives to scale lessons learnt in nutrition-sensitive aquatic food systems approaches from the Pacific to other countries in Asia and Africa.

REQUIREMENTS
This job might be for you if you have these essential skills and qualifications:
• MSc in Nutrition/Health Science/Public Health or related field, with 3 or more years’ research experience or PhD in similar field with more than 1 year research experience. Candidates with more than more than 3 years of post PhD related experience may be considered for Scientist position.
• High competency with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and analytical tools.
• Strong research knowledge and publishing track record in relevant fields.
• Excellent interpersonal skills in working with staff at all levels, including field staff.
• Fluency in written and oral English.
• Motivation for high quality science and delivery of applications/impact from research.
• Experience of supervising staff.

Desired skills and qualifications:
• Strong professional network in the Pacific Region, in relevant areas as related to the responsibilities of the position.
• Demonstrated ability to perform critical thinking on research activities.
• Ability to communicate in Solomon Pijin, Bislama, Tetum or French.
• Knowledge and/or experience of working with the aquaculture and fisheries industry.
• Knowledge and experience of working in developing countries in Pacific region.

Salary and Benefits
This position is co-funded by WorldFish and ACIAR and classified as an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position, based at WorldFish Solomon Island office, with annual salary range as shown below:
• Research Fellow: USD 42,000 – USD 46,000 per annum.
• Scientist: USD 63,000 – USD 67,000 per annum.

Time frame and location
This position will be based at WorldFish’s country office in Solomon Islands with travel to various countries in Pacific region.

Interviews are expected to be held in March 2018. The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible for an initial 2 years contract, with possibility of extension depending on performance of and the availability of funding.
