Nutrition Advisor, Burundi

About the role: This is a 6 months, new role with unaccompanied terms based in Bujumbura with significant time in field support with a salary of Grade 4
The Nutrition Advisor will report to the Programme Director and will work closely with the Country Director, Health & Nutrition Programme Coordinator, Project Manager. The nutrition advisor will also liaise with external partners including the Ministry of Health and the Nutrition Sector Lead in Burundi, UNICEF.

Purpose:

The Nutrition Advisor is responsible for providing technical and strategic support to nutrition programming for Concern in Burundi. This role includes supporting the implementation of a new DFID funded nutrition project in Kirundo, and other potential nutrition projects in Cibitoke, Gitega and Kirundo. The advisor will support the recruitment process of the nutrition staff and will provide technical advice for all nutrition related project activities to ensure high quality project implementation.

The Nutrition Advisor will also play a key role in understanding, through liaising with external nutrition stakeholders and other sources of information, the evolving socio-economic context in the country and suggesting adaptations to the project as the situation changes.

The Nutrition Advisor will have specific responsibility to develop new projects aimed at reducing chronic high levels of malnutrition amongst vulnerable communities (including refugees and internally displaced people.)

You will be responsible for:
Program implementation:
• Support the nutrition team and health and nutrition coordinator in implementing quality projects in line with project plans.

• Support the nutrition team in the development of technical tools and components for nutrition programming.

• Provide technical advice and operational support to ensure nutrition programming incorporates best practice in addressing chronic and acute malnutrition.

• Liaise with Concern Technical Advisors at headquarters level in ensuring best practice from Concern’s global nutrition and resilience programmes

• Develop monitoring tools for assessing outcome and impact of various components of Concern nutrition work, analysing monitoring data and advising on corrective action if required.

• In collaboration with the Health and Nutrition Coordinator, prepare briefs and share learning from Concern’s nutrition programme in Burundi across Concern’s global nutrition portfolio and with relevant external stakeholders in Burundi

• Provide guidance and support in integrating nutrition across Concern’s other programmes in country.

New program Development
• Support the Country Management Team by identifying opportunities for new program development in the nutrition sector in Burundi.
• Engage with key external stakeholders in identifying areas of collaboration for nutrition programming.
• Lead on proposal development for nutrition related opportunities

Capacity Building of Nutrition Staff
• Support relevant managers overseeing health and nutrition activities to develop their teams through providing training, coaching and mentoring as required.
• Provide mentoring and support to nutrition technical staff.
• Support the team in preparing for nutrition related proposals and reports and in responding to technical queries.

Nutrition Coordination and Technical Representation
• In collaboration with the Health and Nutrition Coordinator, liaise with key Burundi nutrition stakeholders at national level ensuring that Concern programme experience contributes to analysis and policy development.
• Participate in nutrition sector meetings and represent Concern at nutrition related meetings/events.
• Lead on technical nutrition liaison, coordination and lesson sharing with other agencies implementing nutrition related work in Burundi

Your skills and experience will include:

• Masters’ degree in Nutrition or relevant field.
• Fluent in french and english
• 5 years’ experience in nutrition field with minimum 3 years working internationally in technical and management in the nutrition sector;
• Significant experience in Nutrition programme design and a successful track record in proposal development and resource mobilisation.
• Good knowledge of Project Cycle Management (PCM) for nutrition programmes
• Experience in implementing nutrition interventions in development and emergency contexts.
• Good communication skills
• Experience in nutrition related research including design, implementation and management of external learning partners;
• Experience in multi-tasking, networking and coordination
• Flexible, able to adapt and to work under stress
