Background
Oxfam in South Sudan conducted a piece of research in wild foods in 2015 entitled ‘Indigenous Food Solutions in South Sudan’ .
Two main recommendations from the 2015 study are:
a) Identify the IWFPs with the greatest nutritional values as well as economic and agricultural potential;
b) Encourage the potential expansion of consumption, collection or production of any highly nutritious or marketable IWFPs, but ensure that environmental impact studies are conducted

In the current food crisis, the use of wild foods is once again prevalent but little is understood about the patterns of their consumption or interplay. A key difficulty in classifying areas and households per IPC status in South Sudan has been a lack of understanding around how, when and why people consume wild foods in different geographic areas. This influences data around main sources of food as well as coping strategy indices. Fluctuations in wild food consumption are crucial to understanding the severity of wild food consumption/foraging as a coping strategy and a hindrance in the current use of the CSI within South Sudan to not only measure household food insecurity, but feed into broader IPC level analysis.

Given the current interest in understanding wild food consumption patterns and based on the recommendations of this piece of work, Oxfam is seeking to conduct a complimentary and in-depth follow up piece. Oxfam in South Sudan is seeking an EFSVL Advisor to support this research work with the in-country Nutrition Coordinator.
Key Deliverables

? Production of a research paper into the varying severities of wild food/foraging as a coping strategy within South Sudan, with Oxfam’s Nutrition Coordinator
? Support Oxfam’s Nutrition Coordinator to design research methodology, data collection, data analysis (including correlation with Food Security outcomes), and write-up of research findings
? Develop contextualised nutrition-sensitive (r)CSI framework for SSD
? Support integration of key risk and protection issues that influence nutrition outcomes into SSD assessment and FGD tools
? Support internal training of EFSVL team regarding nutrition-sensitive indicators and integrated assessment & monitoring techniques
? Support Oxfam’s Nutrition Coordinator to train enumerators
? Co-lead a presentation of initial findings to Oxfam Country Team
? Work with Oxfam’s Senior EFSVL Coordinator and Nutritionist to produce internal Oxfam Guidance Note for integrating contextual nutrition information into assessments (i.e. how to source it, what to ask, etc) and programme design

Key Competencies
? Strong experience in Food Security in emergencies with experience with the interplay between Food Security indicators/outcomes and Nutrition.
? Strong experience in research initiatives and/or assessment tool modification with a focus on food security/nutrition.
? Experience of design and implementation of nutrition-sensitive emergency food security programmes
? Knowledge of the CSI (Coping Strategies Index) and rCSI (Reduced Coping Strategies Index). Use of the CSI/rCSI for food security analysis is essential; experience with contextualizing the CSI in emergencies is desirable.
? Knowledge of IPC Acute analysis and nutrition indicators, plus IPC Acute Malnutrition framework ; experience with monitoring of food security and nutrition outcome indicators
? Experience in leading and taking part in food security and nutrition assessments
? Understanding of gender dynamics within the household and community, experience in taking these into account when designing food security and nutrition programmes to address the needs of poor women in particular.
? Strong knowledge of protection and how to systematically consider protection in programme implementation. Understanding of the interplay between coping strategies and protection risk analysis.
? Strong mentorship skills, specifically the ability to support Oxfam’s in-country Nutrition Coordinator in research methodologies, data collection planning and analysis through coaching, demonstration, accompaniment, training, written advice, verbal advice, research and development.

? Management skills: capacity to support Oxfam’s Nutrition Coordinator to manage international and multi-cultural teams, in difficult and stressful environments team to deliver the work.
? Enhanced collaboration and networking skills; Proven influencing and negotiating skills with internal and external audiences in complex and stressful circumstances.
? Ideally, a good understanding of the South Sudan context and/or previous work experience in South Sudan or similar contexts of extreme food insecurity
? Willingness to travel to remote areas to conduct field work.

Timeframe
? 1 Month in country + maximum 2 weeks part-time remote support
(To start ASAP, ideally research to be conducted mid June-mid July ( 1 month in country) with scope to support Nutrition Coordinator with write up (this can be remote support) in August. )
