The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve forced displacement problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. UNHCR ensures that people have access to adequate nutrient-rich food and safe water to protect the safety, health and well-being of refugees and other populations of concern. For this reason, UNHCR strives to ensure food security and improve the nutritional status of all the people it serves. Promoting the social and economic self-reliance of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons is another key component of UNHCR’s work, both in displacement situations, and in areas of return and reintegration. UNHCR promotes self-reliance by implementing projects that directly protect and enhance the livelihoods of displaced populations and host communities.
