We are recruiting a Humanitarian Nutrition Advisor to be part of the Humanitarian Nutrition Team composed of the Senior Humanitarian Nutrition Advisor and 5 Nutrition Emergency Response Personnel. Our 4 main focus areas are to provide technical support; improve technical capacity; undertake innovation & learning; and advocate for change. The Humanitarian Nutrition Team is part of the Humanitarian Technical Unit (HTU), which consists of humanitarian technical expertise from Nutrition, FSL, WASH, Health, Child Protection, Education, HIV, Shelter and MEAL. The HTU is a dynamic, rapidly developing unit that has integration at its core. We believe that by sectors working together we can provide better quality programming that provides improved outcomes for beneficiaries. We have big plans!
In order to move forward with out ambitions we are seeking an excellent nutritionist with extensive emergency nutrition experience to join the team. Background
Malnutrition is caused by a combination of factors which include a lack of access to food, ill health (through disease, illness and poor hygiene) and impaired infant and young child feeding and care practices. It can have short term consequences such as morbidity, mortality and disability, and long term consequences such as reduced adult size, intellectual ability, economic productivity, reproductive performance and chronic illness and as such malnutrition has implications not only on the individual but also for future generations. Save the Children’s Humanitarian Nutrition activities include rapid and casual assessments and surveys, surveillance and early warning and response options include Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E), Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) (encompassing severe and moderate acute malnutrition programming), micronutrient supplementation, nutrition education and blanket supplementary feeding. Nutrition outcomes are also sought from emergency food security programmes.
Job Purpose
The post holder will manage Nutrition Emergency Response Personnel and reporting to the Humanitarian Nutrition Senior Adviser will form our new Humanitarian Nutrition Team. The Humanitarian Nutrition team will play a central role in achieving our organisational nutrition and child survival breakthroughs working closely with the wider hunger reduction team.
Key Accountabilities
Programme Support (70%):
1. Will be deployed to the field at short notice to assess and set up new emergency nutrition programmes.
2. To conduct, guide or initiate assessments and design programmes in humanitarian contexts to generate funded nutrition responses; and provide technical assistance and conduct evaluations as appropriate.
3. To provide common frameworks, tools and guidance to country programmes to ensure high quality operations and advocacy in humanitarian nutrition programmes.
Technical Capacity Building (10%):
4. To collaborate with the Humanitarian Human Resources team on the recruitment and management of Emergency Response Personnel (ERPs). Effectively manage deployment of ERPs, while supervising, mentoring and supporting their professional development.
5. Working with the HR team support the development and maintenance of a nutrition roster or database of consultants and short-term staff who could be deployed to humanitarian contexts.
6. Provide nutrition support and technical input to existing and new humanitarian capacity building programmes. Develop further technical capacity building initiatives for nutrition and integrated technical programming.
7. Develop and deliver country level, regional and local preparedness and nutrition workshops/programmes for humanitarian nutrition staff.
Programme Policy, Innovation & Learning (10%):
8. To monitor and evaluate programme quality in Save the Children’s humanitarian nutrition work, adherence to common frameworks (e.g. Sphere, Red Cross/NGO Code of Conduct) and to ensure that work is in line with Save the Children’s child rights programming approach.
9. Working with the Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning Adviser, develop and implement effective monitoring, evaluation & learning tools and processes for humanitarian nutrition work.
10. Identify best practice and develop programme policy relating to humanitarian nutrition work, ensuring that this is consistent with Save the Children’s overall policy framework and positions.
11. To coordinate effectively with other Save the Children members on tools, frameworks, and other forms of technical assistance to achieve increasingly coherent support to country programmes from across the Save the Children International on humanitarian nutrition programming.
Advocacy & Representation (10%):
12. Work collaboratively with the Hunger Reduction Team, Humanitarian Policy Team, and Advocacy Division to ensure humanitarian nutrition work contributes towards both global programmes and advocacy organisational objectives.
13. To lead on specific areas of advocacy directly related to emergency nutrition programming, often using documented evidence generated from our programmes.
14. Liaise with the relevant external bodies and organisations in the sector, including the Nutrition Cluster and the Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies Core Group.
15. Support the development of a Save the Children International Emergency Nutrition Technical Working Group.
General
16. Comply with the requirements of SC UK’s child protection policies and other staff policies.
17. To perform such other tasks and responsibilities as may be required from time to time in order to ensure the smooth running of the team, the senior management team, cross departmental teams, the department and SC UK.

Person Specification
Essential
• Significant experience and a track record of success in delivering high quality emergency response programmes in nutrition
• Sound understanding of and commitment to SC generic programme approaches and core standards in humanitarian response
• Ability to travel at short notice, occasionally to remote and insecure locations for up to 50% of work time
• Experience of team management.
• Significant experience of organisational level thought leadership in a technical sector.
• Experience of capacity building and mentoring.
• Experience of working within budget constraints.
• Highly developed writing skills (e.g. at level for producing an assessment report or proposal during a short time period)
• Strong communications skills (both written and verbal) at a level appropriate for high level external representation (lobbying, presentations) and ability to tailor communications to different audiences
• Understanding and practical experience of the cluster approach at country and global level.
• Ability to work effectively across teams and departments
• Ability to analyse diverse information and develop recommendations for an appropriate response
