Inter-governmental Agency on Development IGAD will be hosting the next webinar on August 4th at 3pm Nairobi time titled “  World Health Assembly Resolution 69.9: Where are we on ending the inappropriate promotion of all foods for infants and young children up to the age of 36 months?”

The International Code for the Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (the Code) is well known as the instrument that helps countries protect breastfeeding from the often unnecessary use and promotion of breast-milk substitutes. But equally important is preventing the inappropriate promotion of all foods for infants and young children up to the age of 36 months. Since the Code was adopted in 1981, many WHA resolutions have been passed to clarify or strengthen the Code, especially as the manufacturers of breast-milk substitutes have found loopholes in the Code, or have added other products to their portfolios that they claim are not breast-milk substitutes but are used to undermine breastfeeding or promote products that fall under the Code.

The upcoming webinar will guide country participants through the first 3 of the 7 recommendations in the WHO Guidance and show the results of a research conducted by the RISING Project on how current policies/regulations of Eastern and Southern African countries have incorporated these critical elements. This will enable countries to better understand their current state and plan their way forward to meet their obligations to protect infants and young children, particularly now in the context of COVID-19.”
