Nutrition Lead

About the role: This is a 24-month, replacement role with unaccompanied terms and a salary of Grade 4: €40,003 - €44,449. You will be based in Addis Ababa with 25% field travel.
You will report to the Programme Director and line manage the Health and Nutrition Coordinator. You will also work closely with the Nutrition Team, WASH team, RRM consortium Lead, Technical Nutrition Officers, Sectoral Programme Coordinators, Ministry of Health, Cluster leads and INGOs

Your purpose: The Nutrition Lead is responsible for providing strategic leadership and managerial oversight to nutrition programming for Concern in Ethiopia. This support includes for quality control and innovation in nutrition programming, leading on new business development in the nutrition sector, working with HQ nutrition advisors, the Programme Director and the senior nutrition team in designing nutrition programmes for emergency, refugee and development contexts. Concern has consistently led in developing new and innovative approaches to improving nutrition amongst the poorest and most vulnerable communities in Ethiopia. This includes developing the CMAM approach and more recently, CMAM surge; integrating nutrition across various sectors and innovative resilience work. The Nutrition Lead will have specific responsibility to implement the in-country nutrition strategy, within the Country Strategic Plan and the Concern global nutrition policy; to ensure cohesion between emergency nutrition response and development programmes, including in refugee contexts; improve focus on health system strengthening and building resilience and ensuring integrated programming, particularly in relation to WASH and livelihoods. There is scope for Concern Ethiopia to expand into smallscale health programming and the Nutrition Lead will be responsible for developing programme strategy in this area in collaboration with Concern’s technical health advisors.

You will be responsible for:
Strategic Direction and Management of the Nutrition Unit and Quality Assurance
• Develop and implement the Concern Ethiopia nutrition strategy, in line with the Country Strategic Plan and Concern global policies and strategies
• Management of the nutrition team (emergency/development) to ensure high quality, effective programming with impact, reaching poorest of the poor and those in most need of life saving assistance.
• Provide technical advice and operational support to ensure nutrition programming incorporates best practice in addressing chronic and acute malnutrition
• Provide guidance and support on integrating nutrition across programming and sectors and across emergency, recovery and development programming
Capacity Building and Mentoring
• Mentor the national H&N Coordinator to fulfil their roles in providing leadership, supervision and strategic direction
• Mentor and provide technical support to nutrition technical staff
• Train other technical programme coordinators and managers in direct nutrition & sensitive programming to ensure Concern Ethiopia’s programmes have a strong nutrition lens.
• Support the team in preparing for nutrition related proposals and reports and in responding to technical queries
Programme Development, Innovation and Design
• Lead on nutrition related learning, including research, in collaboration with the Programme Director and the MEAL department, including developing ToRs, supervising consultants, leading the team in field assessments and supporting evaluations.
• Prepare briefs and share learning and best practice in nutrition programming across Concern global nutrition programme and with relevant stakeholders in Ethiopia
• Ensure impact and learning are integral to all nutrition programmes and that nutrition staff develop a culture of learning in their programming approach
• Ensure that the nutrition team works in close collaboration with other programme sectors, participating in inter sectoral internal working groups as required and working closely with other programme teams in areas such as nutrition sensitive agriculture and behaviour change communication
• Ensure that a gender sensitive lens is applied across all nutrition programmes and that nutrition programing aims to have a transformative approach to gender equality for the beneficiary target groups.
New Business Development
• Support the Country Management team by identifying opportunities for new business development in the nutrition sector in Ethiopia
• Engage with key eternal stakeholders in identifying areas of collaboration for nutrition programming
• Lead on proposal development for nutrition related opportunities including significant input into programme design
• Advocate with donors in relation to Concern’s nutrition programming and, with the PD and CD, contribute to building and maintaining donor relations in this area
Coordination, Representation and Networking
• Liaise with key Ethiopia nutrition stakeholders at national level to ensure that Concern programme experience contributes to analysis and policy development
• Lead in Concern’s Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) and Alliance2015 work and ensure the Concern team’s contribution and role are clearly articulated and actioned, in collaboration with the Country Director and Health and Nutrition Coordinator
• Participate in nutrition sector meetings and represent Concern at nutrition related meetings/events
• Lead on technical nutrition liaison, coordination and lesson learning sharing with other agencies implementing nutrition related work in Ethiopia

Your skills and experience will include:

Essential:
• Masters’ degree in nutrition and ten years’ experience in public health and nutrition field with minimum 5 years’ experience working international in technical and management in nutrition sector
• Significant experience in nutrition programme design and a successful track record in proposal development and resource mobilisation
• Experience in Project Cycle Management (PCM) for nutrition programmes
• Experience in implementing nutrition interventions in development and emergency contexts.
• Clear presenter with excellent communication skills
• Experience in capacity building, mentoring and on the job coaching of diverse teams
• Experience in nutrition related research including design, implementation and management of external learning partners
• Experience in external representation, networking and coordination
• Ability to multi task and manage a varied workload in a fast paced setting
• Ability to show flexibility and work under pressure
• Empathy with the values of Concern Worldwide
• Ability to demonstrate awareness of gender equality and gender equity, contribute to a gender sensitive working environment and integrate a gender equality perspective into your working approach
