Do you know of countries/contexts where the estimated number of children with SAM is higher than that of MAM?

This situation seems implausible, as SAM is often 2.5-3 times lower than MAM.

It could happen in the case of a lot of oedema and not a lot of wasting (WHZ < -2).

I did a quick an analysis of 2434 survey datasets that I had to hand found none where SAM prevalence exceeded MAM prevalence.

It is rare and as stated by Mark the Oedema increases the prevalence of SAM in proportion to MAM. It was seen in Goma during the great lake crisis in mid 90s!
