The Eleanor Crook Foundation (ECF) seeks a Uganda Program Coordinator to coordinate all aspects of the Foundation’s local capacity building grant portfolio, Uganda Grassroots Nutrition (UGN) and other programs in Uganda.
ECF is a small US-based family philanthropy that focuses exclusively on global nutrition. With focused and growing research and implementation grant-giving in East Africa valued at over $8M and a significant focus on advocacy for nutrition funding, ECF seeks innovative ways to increase coverage, effectiveness and scale of proven nutrition interventions.

With their significant social capital, extensive networks and unparalleled understanding of local contexts, local organizations represent significant potential to catalyze change. However, less than 2% of all humanitarian funding goes directly to local NGOs, despite a growing consensus that they may often be better-placed to deliver services more effectively, efficiently and sustainably than large international organizations. Given the potential comparative advantages of local NGOs and the need to find multiple, inter-connected and sustainable ways to increase nutrition coverage, ECF is funding a small coalition of local registered non-government organizations in Northern Uganda.

Supporting the Nutrition Research Program Officer and Nutrition Technical Director, the Uganda Program Coordinator will facilitate impact, identify learnings and mitigate risk. The Program Coordinator will monitor and evaluate grantees’ work on the ground, manage and grow grantee and partner relationships, build technical and organizational capacity, and serve as the Foundation’s day-to-day eyes, ears, and voice in Uganda.

Uganda Program Coordinator Responsibilities
• Foster strong and collaborative relationships with program team contacts at ECF’s Uganda grantee organizations to successfully communicate, problem solve, and monitor program progress, jointly with ECF’s Nutrition Technical Director and Nutrition Research Program Officer.
• Oversee the implementation of programs and ensure they adhere to commitments made by grantees to ECF.
• Contribute to the substantive design of new programs and redesign of existing programs (as necessary).
• Identify opportunities to improve the quality of ECF-funded projects to ensure high quality programming exists overall.
• Conduct regular and frequent site visits to further inform the foundation’s understanding of grantee progress, challenges, concerns, and opportunities to drive impact.
• With support of the Nutrition Research Program Officer, provide ongoing technical guidance to grantees on program activities, including nutrition surveys, nutrition-specific activities and nutrition-sensitive activities (including integration with other sectors).
• Actively support ongoing assessment of organizational capacity and provide technical and managerial capacity-building as required.
• Actively participate in internal grantee coordination and planning meetings.
• Establish and maintain relationships and support learning opportunities among key nutrition stakeholders in Uganda, including local leaders, the MoH, policy advocates, and other donors and implementers.
• Facilitate new collaborations between partners across ECF’s nutrition programming in Uganda.
• Identify opportunities for further nutrition work and share ongoing developments in nutrition in Uganda with ECF.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Expected Outcomes:
• Effectively oversees and supports nutrition projects according to commitments made by grantees to ECF.
• Develops proactive, positive and constructive relationships that foster trust with existing and potential nutrition grantees and partners.
• Supports ongoing efforts for technical excellence through capacity building and problem-solving within grantee organizations.
• Identifies and generates ongoing and useful learning within and across grantees.
• Supports ECF’s positioning as a knowledge resource on nutrition innovation, research, capacity building and scaling.
• Builds ECF’s profile among key nutrition stakeholders in Uganda.
• Increases the Foundation’s understanding and awareness of the local context and ongoing developments and opportunities for nutrition in Uganda.

Required Qualifications:
• BSc in Nutrition-related field, preferably development-related
• 5 – 7 years of experience implementing, coordinating and supporting Maternal and Child Health/Nutrition programs in East Africa (preferably including Uganda)
• Deep understanding of Ugandan government policies and protocols
