Develops, leads, monitors and evaluates nutrition project(s). This involves effectively managing and reporting on the projects in line with the objectives, time frame and budget with a focus on nutrition system strengthening, training and coordination. Providing technical support, leadership and strategic direction, other important aspects of the role include managing and training nutrition staff to meet quality standards in nutrition delivery, encouraging beneficiary participation, and managing and training nutrition staff, and planning and contributing to the development of new nutrition project proposals and reports.

Project Overview

Medair’s nutrition programme in Leer and Mayendit counties is following the nationally recommended Community based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) approach. In these counties, the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) levels are above World Health Organization (WHO) emergency threshold. Furthermore the project includes WASH, Health and PSS components.

Key Activity Areas

Nutrition Project Management
•Manage projects to meet objectives within budget and time frame and report concerns.
•Provide strong leadership and clear objectives to ensure short/long-term positive impacts.
•Contribute to implementation of a nutrition strategy including proactive, responsible exit planning.
•Supervise nutrition activities, evaluating progress through outputs and impact using both quantitative and qualitative data, in analysis and taking appropriate action as needed to ensure continued progress.
•Support the development of new proposals by providing data linked to the assessed needs

Staff Recruitment, Management & Capacity building
•Recruit the required project staff in line with Medair’s policy and South Sudan Labour Laws.
•Line-manage the nutrition manager(s), including day-to-day management, training and appraisals.
•Facilitate regular meetings to assist information sharing between project staff.
•Provide coaching and technical supervision to staff to develop ownership and full responsibility.
•Identify areas of development and consequently execute suitable capacity building plans.

Nutrition Programme Reporting
•Submit timely and quality internal and external project reports (Bi-weekly UNICEF, Sit-rep, etc).

Financial Management
•Manage the nutrition budget and ensure all expenses are according to budget and meet the Medair standards with regard to financial management, including accountability and good governance.

Logistics
•Ensure items are procured, transported, stored, managed and accounted for correctly.
•Ensure nutrition buffer stocks procured and available and ensure the procurement of buffer nutrition commodity, medicine, equipment, and supplies are completed to avoid stock outs.
•Develop strategies to track and account for therapeutic supplies in order to prevent stock outs.
•Timely communicate to health and nutrition advisors breaks in GIK pipeline in order to follow up at Juba level and/or explore alternative means of acquiring the supplies.

Monitoring & Evaluation/ Quality Management
•Ensure nutrition projects are implemented in line with donor requirements and in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards i.e. Sphere and HAP standards
•Participate in Medair internal workshops to keep up with changing trends and new guidelines.
•Provide support to adhere to the nationally approved CMAM and MIYCN guidelines.
•Undertake bi-weekly nutrition clinic visits and complete the site monitoring checklist.
•Conduct the semi-annual nutrition clinic gap analysis exercise.

Communication & Coordination
•Develop regular and supportive communication structures to ensuring good cooperation.
•Participate in nutrition coordination meetings, working groups, feeding back on relevant issues.

Qualifications
•Higher level qualification, preferably in nutrition or in another relevant field such as nursing/midwifery/doctor/community-based training.
•Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written).

Experience / Competencies
•2 years post-qualification professional experience. Management in a nutrition / health context.
•Ability and willingness to manage project implementation.
•Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Sphere and HAP Standards and other international protocols.
•Good numerical, report writing and administration skills.
•Able to prioritise clearly and oversee multiple tasks.
•Committed to consultative and servant minded leadership.
•Aptitude for community mobilisation and capacity-building.
•Team-player with good inter-personal skills. Capacity to work under pressure and manage stress levels.

Working Conditions
•This is a field-based position and working and living conditions may be very different to that previously experienced. South Sudan currently is dynamic and the location of the interventions may be in areas of relative insecurity.
