Job Title: Health and Nutrition Advisor Reports to: Assistant Country Director Programmes Job Location: Lilongwe, Malawi Contract Details: 7 month fixed term contract (Maternity Cover), Unaccompanied, Grade B Job Purpose: The purpose of the National Health and Nutrition Advisor is to provide leadership and guidance for quality programme implementation of Health and Nutrition programmes throughout all of Concern's district programmes. Main duties & Responsibilities: -Guide the implementation of Concern Malawi health and nutrition framework by providing strategic and technical advice to managers, nutrition programme staff and partners in district Area Programs. -In coordination with the Area Program Manager, provide leadership and management support for the Health and Nutrition Programme, including working with district staff to plan, supervise and monitor activities; compile and submit regular donor reports; monitor quarterly activities and expenditures against workplan and budget; and lead development of programme plans, tools, and activities. - Carry out capacity building and on-the-job mentoring as needed to strengthen the technical skills and capacity of Concern Malawi staff in nutrition and health related issues - Support Concern Area Programmes and DHO staff to design and implement monitoring and evaluation systems for health and nutrition programs, and plan and carry out special assessments and evaluations as needed. - Coordinate health and nutrition programmes with other Concern programmes, in collaboration with technical advisors and programme managers, to identify synergies and possibilities for integration of activities. - Lead the process of designing and writing health and nutrition programme proposals - Support and mentor area programme staff to ensure high quality programme reporting and provide feedback to area work plans ensures effectiveness. - Review and provide technical input on donor reports, annual reports, annual plans, and other documentation. - Network and coordinate with other stakeholders working in the field of health and nutrition and represent Concern in national and international forums as relevant. Work Targets Set For This Post Over The Contract Period: Specifically, the following deliverables are expected to be achieved during the 7-month period: .Development of a detailed behaviour change communication strategy for Concern's new child survival project being implemented in Dowa and Nkhotakota districts, including carrying out barrier analysis assessment, identifying most appropriate channels and strategies for messages, developing focused, simple health messages to be used throughout the project, and determining strategies for delivering messages. .Oversight of the final evaluation of Concern's support to CTC in Nsanje and Lilongwe district, including ensuring smooth handover of CTC activities from Concern Worldwide to District Health Offices, and supervision and support to final evaluation consultant, and technical oversight and review of endline nutrition survey. .Finalizing materials, tools, and training guides for capacity development training to be conducted among Village Development Committees in Dowa and Nkhotakota districts, and providing technical oversight during the roll-out of training to VDCs .Coordinating with MoH IMCI Unit, District Health Offices, and Save the Children to plan and implement training for Health Surveillance Assistants in Community Case Management in Dowa and Nkhotakota. Person specification: Essential: .At least a Masters degree in Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health, Public Health or related field, with a preference for nutrition qualifications .At least five years practical experience and demonstrated skills in the design and management of various high impact health and nutrition interventions in developing countries; with a particular focus on strengthening heath systems .Knowledge and experience of various models of health and nutrition interventions including the CMAM approach .Experience in programme or operational research and data management/analysis .Competence using quantitative, qualitative and participatory methods for programme planning, monitoring and evaluation and operational research .Coaching and Mentoring .Highly adaptive work style .Willing, able and interested to work as part of a team .Excellent communication and writing skills .Ability to analyse and contextualise causes of malnutrition in diverse cultures .Knowledge of databases, M&E and Rights Based Approach .Good understanding of how the Governments works including mechanisms such as SWAP and experience in advocacy Desirable: .Experience in working with international donors and other partners To apply: All applications should be submitted through our website at https://jobs.concern.net Closing date for applications is 27th October 2010 All candidates who are short-listed for a first round interview will be notified via email after the application deadline.
