Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to experience emergency nutrition work with one of the largest Emergency Nutrition teams globally. The Emergency Health and Nutrition (EHN) team at Save the Children US works closely with colleagues in the development sector of Health & Nutrition as well as with colleagues in Humanitarian Response, both within the US team and with other Members in multiple countries, allowing the intern to gain exposure to many different facets of the organization. The intern will work under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and be closely mentored by one of the advisers from the Emergency Nutrition team, with oversight from the Director, and will primarily focus on Emergency Nutrition activities as well as administrative, logistical and programmatic support as needed.
In the immediate aftermath of a disaster or conflict, and throughout the transition from emergency response to recovery and sustainable development, Save the Children’s presence in 120 countries facilitates the rapid delivery of evidence-based and innovative health and nutrition interventions that address the major causes of illness and death among the world’s most vulnerable populations. Save the Children’s Emergency Nutrition programs focus on basic life-saving maternal, newborn and child healthcare, detection and treatment of acute malnutrition through the community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), infant and young child feeding in emergencies (IYCF-E) and micronutrient provision. These program interventions are facilitated in close collaboration with national health authorities, and through engagement with national and sub-national coordination mechanisms. In cases where local infrastructure and capacity are significantly diminished, Save the Children provides direct services as an interim measure until the transition of these services to local authorities is possible. Emergency Nutrition programs focus on integrating with Save the Children’s other priority sectors where appropriate, including Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Health, Child Protection, Education and Food Security & Livelihoods. This integration facilitates a holistic approach to meeting the needs of children and their families in times of crisis.
Save the Children's Emergency Nutrition team also focuses at the regional and global levels on exciting new research in critical areas including management of acute malnutrition in infants (MAMI) and IYCF-E. Save the Children also focuses on capacity-building, for example in IYCF-E through regional and national training. Save the Children has a number of tools that are globally available, including a CMAM Toolkit and IYCF-E Toolkit, which are kept up to date through funding revisions as required. Save the Children is also working on a number of new tools, for example an IYCF-friendly framework with UNHCR which is designed to outline how IYCF can be integrated into other sectors in emergency contexts, and vice versa.
As a result of the Emergency Nutrition work ongoing as described above, there are a number of novel and innovative initiatives that the intern could be involved with, depending on areas of interest, as well as learning more on supporting country offices implementing Emergency Nutrition programs directly.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Nutrition team with projects that come up within Save the Children's Emergency Nutrition Working Group, which could range for example from literature reviews for research, to creating and editing e-learning modules for recently developed tools, to creating advocacy documents to promote the work of the Nutrition team
-Support the Nutrition team with tracking the team’s evolving portfolio at the global, regional and country levels, including reviewing grant proposals and reports, improving monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) systems for Emergency Nutrition, learning more about how Save the Children Emergency Nutrition programs throughout the entire program cycle
-Coordinate with other sectors (Health, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH, Education, Child Protection etc.) across the organization to understand how nutrition works with them through nutrition-sensitive programming, and assist with identifying potential areas of future collaboration
-Work with the Emergency Nutrition team to improve knowledge management within the team and across the organization, including maintaining google webpages as required to promote the Emergency Nutrition work internally and externally
Attend webinars and brown bags to learn more about Save the Children's ongoing emergency work and identify opportunities for linkages with ongoing Emergency Nutrition team projects
-Attend relevant Nutrition team meetings to learn more about current issues being discussed at the global, regional and national levels
-Assist the Program Coordinator with tasks for the Emergency Health and Nutrition team more generally as required
NB: Opportunity to undertake personal project in Emergency Nutrition possible, with Save the Children providing mentorship and technical expertise if required.
Requirements
-Current student or recent graduate of Masters in Nutrition or Public Health Nutrition
-Demonstrated interest in Public Health and Humanitarian Assistance
-Strong written and oral communication skills, solid interpersonal skills, detail-oriented, ability to work within a team
-Proficient in Microsoft Office
-Experience with basic data analysis and Google sites is desirable
-To be classified as an intern: an individual must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate academic program and able to receive credit from his/her college or institution (Minimum requirement is a letter of support and documentation is required only after an internship is offered.)
-An individual who is not enrolled as a student may apply for an internship, but will be classified as a skilled volunteer, not as an intern
