Role & Responsibilities
Assist in the direct implementation of nutrition interventions which may include treatment of severe acute malnutrition, moderate acute malnutrition, or provision of blanket supplementary feeding. Provide technical capacity building to the Nutrition team and Ministry of Health (MoH/CHD). Provide training and supervision to local staff to allow them to implement the programmes. Ensure presence of adequate supplementary supplies at the program implementation site. Write timely progress nutrition reports to assist in overall nutrition programming. Provide training to local staff as needed, monitor overall health and nutrition situation and observe for potential outbreaks.

Medair directly implements and provides training to Ministry of Health/County Health Department (MoH/CHD) and local partners to establish nutrition services including blanket supplementary feeding and therapeutic feeding for children and pregnant lactating women.

Key Activity Areas
Nutrition Management
• Responsible for the job training and supervision of the locally recruited staff following international and South Sudan guidelines.
• Provide technical support and guidance to all Medair nutrition programmes in accordance with international and South Sudan guidelines to ensure quality of interventions.
• Support or implement sustainable Infant and Young Child Feeding activities.
• Implement participatory Behaviour Change Communication methods in nutrition project.
• Provide training to community health and nutrition promoters to share key nutrition messages.
• Facilitate discussions with the partners and local authorities to ensure they have a good understanding of Medair’s programming and interventions.
• Participate in nutrition assessments and surveys and provide timely monthly reports for the program.
• Ensure regular monitoring and evaluation activities on project implementation.
• Provide input into the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability.
• Input into the development of the country strategy, new projects and donor proposals.

Staff Management
• Assist the Project Manager to manage and oversee the assigned local nutrition team including recruitment, day-to-day management, development, training and performance review.
• Facilitate regular team meetings with the assigned nutrition team, reviewing team and individual objectives, ensuring team members are kept informed of issues relevant to their work.
• Ensure the application of Medair South Sudan staff safety and security guidelines.

Financial Management
• Work with the Project Manager and Nutrition Team Leader to manage finances within the field location.
• Coordinate petty cash requirements of the intervention team, ensuring all required paperwork is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

Communication & Coordination
• Maintain appropriate, regular and transparent communication structures with the assigned team.
• Represent Medair at relevant coordination meetings involving local authorities, UN agencies and NGOs.

Logistics
• Manage the correct and timely ordering of needed stocks and supplies to the field location and ensure proper records are in place.
• Monitor expiration dates of all stocks in the field location to ensure timely use.

Quality Management
• Promote and use the Medair intranet and other operating procedures.
• Implement relevant policies and standards relating to health service delivery including Sphere and HAP standards, Ministry of Health and donor guidelines.
• Participate in Medair workshops and distance learning sessions to keep up with changing trends.

Qualifications
• Clinical degree or diploma as nutritionist or nurse.

Languages
• Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written)


Experience / Competencies
• 2 years of post-qualification experience as nutritionist or nurse.
• Experience in a nutrition programme in a developing country, preferably in a humanitarian context.
• Strong knowledge in the management of acute malnutrition.
• Strong knowledge of infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in emergencies.
• Excellent organisational skills; able to oversee multiple tasks; able to enforce procedures.
• Committed to consultative and servant minded leadership; able to develop and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, beneficiaries, other agencies and local authorities.
• Good report writing skills; ability and willingness to manage project implementation.
• Aptitude for community mobilisation and capacity-building.
• Able to cope with basic living conditions in the field and during field trips.
