FEWS NET is a complex activity designed to deliver evidence-based analysis and early warning of hazards, food insecurity, vulnerability to food insecurity, and famine to the US Government and USAID, and to national governments and regional, international and non-governmental organizations in the countries of FEWS NET coverage. The project will be implemented in collaboration with approximately 24 small country offices located largely in Africa, as well as via coverage of additional countries throughout the world. FEWS NET will monitor, analyze, and report on food security conditions in countries that collaborate with the activity.
Responsibilities
The position will be based in Washington, DC with some travel to field offices. The Markets and Trade Advisor will provide technical support in the area of markets and trade to support early warning monitoring, analysis, and reporting. The Markets and Trade Advisor will be responsible for the following activities:
• Develop guidance and support field staff to monitor, analyze, and incorporate markets and trade concepts into their monitoring, analysis, and reporting
• Review and provide feedback and guidance to field staff on monthly reports, alert statements, food security assessments, and trip reports
• Participate in the production of key FEWS NET information products and briefings, including reviewing and providing technical feedback and guidance
• Support field staff to develop and implement in-depth studies and assessments (as needed)
• Support capacity-building and network strengthening to international, regional, and national partners; and
• Contribute to the technical direction of the project.
Basic Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, or Economics
• Minimum of 10 years previous international experience providing technical assistance for activities in related areas above
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent analytical, communication, editing and writing skills with the ability to conceptualize the evaluation and to understand the strategic implications of findings of other team members
• Demonstrated project management, leadership, and technical skills
• Fluent English, fluent French or Spanish highly desirable
