Oxford Policy Management (OPM) is seeking to recruit a full-time staff Public Health Nutritionist position at the level of ‘Consultant’ or ‘Senior Consultant’[b/] to join our Nutrition Portfolio.
At OPM, we only have four levels of staff. Assistant consultants typically join straight out of post-graduate training. Consultants join with work experience, some management experience, are able to work independently and have a good understanding of the consultancy market place. Senior Consultants are able to take on large management and business strategy responsibilities and Principal Consultants are thought leaders in their area of specialization.
If you were working for us, here are some of the things you would have done last week:
- Debated various impact evaluation designs for a health systems intervention in Pakistan to improve nutrition outcomes
- Presented operational research findings to decision-makers and implementers to better design nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programmes in Northern Nigeria
- Written-up a technical design note of a monitoring system of a cash transfer programme aimed at improving nutrition outcomes in Bihar, India
- Joined a ‘catch-up conference call’ with colleagues in academic institutions that OPM regularly collaborates with
- Prepared a new survey module to capture male attitudes towards key nutrition behaviours in Northern Nigeria that will be pre-tested next month
- A lunch time walk through Christchurch Meadows with a colleagues from OPM’s Water and Social Protection teams to brainstorm on the challenges of nutrition-sensitive programmes
The consultant’s responsibilities will be centred on the following tasks and functions:
• Develop technical and financial proposals for tenders related to nutrition and food security projects – initially with oversight and support by the senior consultants and later independently
• Undertake a broad range of technical work on OPM Nutrition Portfolio consultancy assignments
• Manage projects to a high-level of quality, professionalism and rigour
• Contribute to the Nutrition Portfolio’s intellectual capital development initiatives including capacity building, publications, innovation and developing technical resources to be used across the company
• Foster good relations with clients, including partner government ministries
• Take a proactive approach to personal and career development by keeping abreast of latest developments within the portfolio and technical areas, and taking opportunities to attend internal and external courses as appropriate.
• Ensure Nutrition Portfolio projects are delivered to maximise OPM’s social (i.e. non-profit) impact objectives
Successful applicants must have:
• A post-graduate level of education in a relevant discipline (public health, nutrition, epidemiology, health economics, development economics or other appropriate social science discipline)
• Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation or evaluation of social science research with a focus on nutrition and food security programmes / policies / interventions
• Demonstrated policy-focused research record and evidence of publishing original work in the area of nutrition, and engaging research with policy.
• The ability to be both a team player and to use their own initiative to prioritise work and handle various demands appropriately
• The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients both verbally and in writing
• The ability to be flexible and take on new challenges
• Experience working in developing countries and / or transitional economies
Preferred:
• Experience of consultancy assignments
• Experience of developing project proposals, preparing project budgets over £100,000 GBP
• Experience of project management, including the management of large project teams
• Ability to work in at least one relevant foreign language
This is a permanent position that is ideally full-time and based in our offices in Oxford, UK. The role will involve overseas travel to ensure effective design and implementation of projects.
