Role and Responsibilities To manage the Emergency Response Nutrition project(s) and team to ensure activities meet proposal objectives within appropriate timeliness and budgets, and that the services meet Medair quality standards. The ERT Nutrition Project Manager coordinates and identifies locations with nutrition needs, and develops, leads, monitors and evaluates the Emergency Response nutrition assessments and interventions. This involves leadership and strategic decision-making to effectively manage information and report on the projects with a focus on nutrition system strengthening, training and coordination. Project Overview Medair has a multi-sector relief programme with an overall objective to reduce morbidity and mortality of vulnerable populations in South Sudan. The Emergency Response Team (ERT) works across all ten states of South Sudan in response to acute emergencies: displacement due to conflict or disasters, returnee/refugee influxes, disease outbreaks and in emergency level malnutrition. The ERT has teams across four sectors – Health, Nutrition, Non-Food Items (NFIs) / Emergency Shelter and WASH, with teams often working together in field sites. Multiple emergency response sites are active at any given time. Starting Date As soon as possible Initial Contract Details Full time, contract of 24 months Key Activity Areas Nutrition Project Management • Manage the emergency nutrition project(s) in order to meet the project objectives and report promptly any operational concerns to line manager and country nutrition advisor. Ensure accurate and timely reporting of activities according to Medair, donor and other applicable time frames and formats. • Provide strong leadership of emergency nutrition project(s), ensuring short, mid and long-term positive impacts / outcomes for beneficiaries, local nutrition authorities (if applicable) and local nutrition staff. • Contribute to development and implementation of an appropriate and effective nutrition strategy including quick deployment, integrated CMAM (when possible), Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) in emergency, proactive, responsible exit planning in consultation with country nutrition advisor, ERT PC and other nutrition staff. • Set clear objectives and indicators for nutrition assessments and interventions in collaboration with nutrition advisor, nutrition staff, PC and other sectors when multi-sectoral responses. • Continuously monitor and supervise emergency nutrition activities, evaluating progress with both quantitative and qualitative data, involving the nutrition team in analysis, taking appropriate action. • Input into the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability in all aspects of the project. • Decide on new activities and new project sites and provide input regarding future project growth and changes needed, linked to the assessed needs and gaps and the Medair country strategy. Communication and Coordination • Develop and maintain good relationships with the Nutrition Cluster coordination team, NGOs, UN agencies and other nutrition actors with the objective of ensuring good cooperation and partnerships. Staff Management • Line-manage the Nutritionist(s) and Health and Nutrition Manager(s) of the emergency nutrition team, including day-to-day management, development and training, appraisals, etc. It may also be necessary to line manage other nutrition project staff. Oversee quality recruitment of field nutrition staff. Financial Management • Manage the Emergency Nutrition team budget and ensure all expenses are according to budget. Logistics • Ensure nutrition supplies and equipment are ordered on time to ensure buffer stock are readily available in Juba warehouse. Work in close collaboration with ERT logistics for staff movement and to ensure items are procured, transported, stored, managed and accounted for correctly. • Submit timely requests to nutrition partners (UNICEF, WFP) to release core pipeline nutrition supplies and monitor supply provision. Security Management • When teams are on the ground, working with the ERT PC to monitor the security situation, gathering information from various sources and feeding back important information to Medair management. Quality Management • Ensuring that emergency nutrition projects are implemented in line with donor proposals and requirements and in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards. • Ensure nutrition assessments and interventions are in line with relevant national and international guidelines (MUAC sampling, CMAM, IYCF). Qualifications • Higher level qualification, preferably in nutrition or in another relevant field such as nursing/midwifery/doctor/community-based training • University degree in a relevant subject, preferably nutrition or public health desirable Languages • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written) Experience / Competencies • 2 years post-qualification professional experience in a relevant field • Management experience in a nutrition / health context • 2 years’ experience working in a nutrition / health programme in a developing country, preferably in an emergency context with experience using the CMAM model desirable • Experience implementing BCC projects - participatory mothers groups including IYCF in emergencies • Knowledge and experience of nutrition / primary health care principles and management • Clinical skills within a Primary Health Care setting desirable; advanced planning, assessment and analytical skills desirable; experience in design, monitoring of implementation and evaluation of CMAM programmes desirable Medair Standard Working Requirements for the Field • Experienced professionals in a relevant field; Overseas intercultural experience • Committed Christians; commitment to the Medair values • Strong working knowledge of English, spoken and written • Working knowledge of French, spoken and written, for French-speaking field programmes • Single or married (with no children under 18).
