Country: Afghanistan Department: International Operations Essential Job Duties/Scope of Work: BACKGROUND International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development projects. Established in in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses to address the critical need for medical care in war-torn Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation, International Medical Corps continues to implement programming in Afghanistan, focused on addressing humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable while also supporting training and capacity-building. International Medical Corps is recruiting a Community Education and Social and Behavior Change Advisor (SBC Advisor), to be based in Kabul, Afghanistan, for an anticipated US Agency for International Development project. The Comprehensive Nutrition, Hygiene and Sanitation Project (USAID CINHS) is a five-year, multi-sectoral intervention designed to improve the nutrition status of women of reproductive age and children, focusing on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life (conception to 24 months of age). JOB SUMMARY The SBC Advisor shall be responsible for providing technical support in developing and implementing SBC strategies to maximize the impact of the project. S/he will contribute to shaping programmatic interventions and activities that address the barriers to engagement and optimal behaviors. S/he will provide significant input in planning and implementing barrier analyses studies and conducting other types of formative research to ensure the development of curriculum and training materials that will support project goals and outcomes. S/he will work directly with senior project staff and consortium partners, with specific attention to the needs and actions of women and children. S/he will liaise with appropriate ministries, donors, and stakeholders in close collaboration with the COP and Country Director. The SBC Advisor will report to the DCOP. Work closely with senior technical staff to design and develop project activities and interventions that maximize results by integrating proven, evidence-based SBC strategies. 2. Collaborate with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager to develop and implement relevant analyses – including barrier analysis and other types of formative research – to inform the development of communication materials as well as other project actions. 3. Contribute to the development of training materials and evaluation criteria developed by the Gender Specialist to ensure integration of gender equity messaging by staff and partners. 4. Contribute to staff performance evaluations, particularly regarding community engagement and SBC capacity and project-related outputs. 5. Report regularly on project activities, outputs, and outcomes. 6. Contribute to other programmatic and financial reports as required. • Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS: • At least 5 years of experience working in the field of social and behavior change – including demonstrated experience supporting effective nutrition and WASH-related programs in developing countries. • An advanced degree (Master’s degree) in nutrition or public health or equivalent combination of education and experience • Proactive and creative approach to program development and management. • Experience in Afghanistan or other similar setting. • Demonstrated diplomatic, management and interpersonal communication skills to ensure internal coherence among diverse team members and sub-contractors, as well as relations with relevant ministries, civil society, private sector and other stakeholders. • Prior experience working on USAID programs preferred. • Fluency in English (written and spoken). Proficiency or knowledge of Pashto or Dari is a plus. • Based in Kabul, with frequent travel to field sites, security permitting.
