BACKGROUND International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development projects. Established in in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses to address the critical need for medical care in war-torn Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation, International Medical Corps continues to implement programming in Afghanistan, focused on addressing humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable while also supporting training and capacity-building. International Medical Corps is recruiting a Nutrition Advisor, to be based in Kabul, Afghanistan, for a US Agency for International Development project. The Initiative for Hygiene, Sanitation, and Nutrition Project (USAID IHSAN) is a five-year, multi-sectoral intervention designed to improve the nutrition status of women of reproductive age and children, focusing on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life (conception to 24 months of age). JOB SUMMARY The Nutrition Advisor will provide technical support in development nutrition, with a particular focus on addressing the causal factors and consequences of stunting, wasting, and other poor nutrition and health conditions. S/he will provide technical advice on how to advance the goals of the project, and ensure that an integrated approach is used for WASH and nutrition interventions and training materials, incorporating the nutritional benefits of agriculture and livestock activities. S/he will have an in-depth understanding of the relationship between WASH, agriculture, early childhood development and nutrition, particularly the needs of women and children. S/he will work directly with the Technical WASH & Nutrition Director and other senior project staff and consortium partners. S/he will work closely with the Ministry of Public Health Public Nutrition Department (PND) and stakeholders in close collaboration with the Senior Capacity Development Advisor and the Technical WASH & Nutrition Director. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES • Support the development of multi-sectorial, integrated training materials. • Provide training, supervision, and technical leadership for nutrition staff. • Work with the MOPH / PND and other government ministries to support finalizing and implementation of multi-sectorial nutrition policies and strategies. SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS: • Advanced degree (post-graduate or higher) in human nutrition with a focus on maternal and child health in a development context. • At least 10 years of progressive experience implementing / leading community and clinic-based nutrition programs focused on stunting and anemia, experience with addressing wasting, and knowledge of social and behavior change activities. • Experience in Afghanistan or other similar setting. • Prior experience working on USAID programs preferred. • Fluency in English (written and spoken). Proficiency or knowledge of Pashto or Dari is a plus. • Based in Kabul, with frequent travel to field sites, security permitting.
