In our department we want to mainstream nutrition in global framework of climate-change strategy
Climate change influences air and water quality, and temperature variations. All this changes are directly related to availability and accessibility of food products and safe drinking water, therefore nutrition safety and food security should play an important role in a climate change strategy. Environmental disasters (e.g. floods, extreme temperatures), caused by climate change also emerge the need for adaptation of health and agricultural system capacity. The stated ecological changes are also associated with development and progression of noncommunicable diseases (cardiovascular diseases, hypertension), as well as increase in prevalence of communicable diseases (malaria, diarrhea), conditions that are preventable and treatable with nutritional measures. Nutritional health education for health professionals and promotion and information activities for public about nutrition in relation to climate change could benefit general public knowledge and contribute to the prevention of negative consequences of climate change.
In my opinion insuring food security and availability of safe drinking water (adaptation of legislation and policies for agricultural and health sectors) and improving public information (campaign and education) about prevention and treatment of diseases with nutritional measures are important measures that countries can take to prevent problems caused by climate change.
