What measures can be taken to mitigate the risk of selling produce from the kitchen gardens (vegetables/fruits) in the market? Which indicators can be used to monitor that the produce is being utilized by the targeted group (children 6-23 months)?
Having households consuming vegetables at home rather than selling them on the market is a challenge. In Tdh Keyhole Gardens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktg9Z1tGGcI we promote a high diversity of vegetables. This firstly increases dietary diversity and secondly also prevents people from selling. If people harvest big amounts of one vegetable they tend more to sell than if they have regularly small and different quantities to harvest.
From our monitoring data we see that households consume some 75%, they gift 15% and they sell some 10% of harvest. We do not consider selling necessarily as negative, since vegetables are mostly sold to neighbours, but few sell to market. Selling locally also benefits rural nutrition. Gifting is very positive, since it provides access to those who do not produce themselves.
The challenges in monitoring intake of specific groups is huge. Hopefully we get some more thoughts about methods which are feasible to use also in terms of efforts.
