Job Title: Survey Development Technical Manager Reports To: CEO, Valid International Region: Global. Preferably Oxford based. Home-based also considered (within acceptable commuting distance of Oxford). This role will require international travel, minimum of 40% of the time. About Valid International Limited Valid International specialises in the research, development and implementation of evidence-based techniques to improve the quality, impact and accountability of humanitarian assistance and social entrepreneurial ventures. Founded in 1999, our surveying practice has a track record of developing survey techniques that enable breakthroughs in the areas of scale, cost-effectiveness and quality of insights. We are headquartered in Oxford, UK but with a global reach, through our network of partners and field based consultants. Job Description: • This is a new role in Valid International’s needs assessment, coverage assessment and program monitoring and evaluation practice. Working with a team of Valid International research specialists, field based consultants and partners, you will be required to design and conduct bespoke spatial mapping surveys in a fast paced environment, while contributing to the culture and development of a strong consulting team. Considerable international travel is involved. Some will be to conferences in developed countries but most travel will be to ‘on-the-ground’ survey sites in countries with a lower comfort factor. Responsibilities of the role • Design tailor-made surveys as per client requirements and information needs • Support and/or lead the implementation of surveys – in country and from HQ. • Do project-specific data analysis (see qualifications requirements below) • Provide technical support on survey/study design for other related Valid International projects (for example ‘evaluation’ work) • Train Valid consultants and field staff on survey instruments, survey tools, survey methods, and survey analysis • Participate in the development of the spatial mapping and spatial modelling framework of Valid International • Participate in the writing of survey or project-specific statistical analysis scripts and workflows that will aid data analysis by Valid consultants and field staff • Participate in the documentation, collation and dissemination of Valid’s survey designs, instruments and tools, survey methods, survey outputs and programming scripts. Experience and Qualifications Essential • Minimum Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. statistics, computer science, social or physical geography, epidemiology, or relate discipline) • Demonstrable experience and competence in survey design and implementation • Experience with language-based statistical or numerical analysis software such as SAS, STATA, S+, R, GAUSS, MATLAB or Mathematica. Our preferred tool is the R Language for data analysis and graphics, but we are prepared to train. • Some familiarity with a programming or scripting language and program construction and common data structures. • Good numeracy skills • Demonstrable competence in training and enablement techniques, both within an organization (e.g. skills transfer) and outward to clients (training events). • Evidence of project planning and organising skills • You are quick, bright, and numerate – training to get you up to speed is a given Desirable • Experience with scientific workflow systems • Experience with cartographic / GIS software • Basic knowledge of computational geometry • Basic knowledge of Bayesian and resampling techniques”. • Familiarity with RAnalyticFlow and RStudio Starting Salary: £30,000 - £36,000 depending on skills and experience.
