Medair is urgently seeking a Nutrition / Public Health Consultant with experience in Nutrition Surveys. Location of work: Abdi District, Ouaddai region, Chad. Timeframe: To be available in country from early October 2013 onwards for three to four weeks, with write up of final report reviewed and completed by 1st December 2013. Project title: Management of acute malnutrition among children 6-59 months Project description: The most recent SMART survey conducted in January/February 2013 found that in Ouaddai Region in Eastern Chad, rates of acute malnutrition have increased (GAM 17.3%, SAM 4.6%), showing that in Ouaddai Region the response to the nutritional crisis in 2012 has not been adequate. The MoH requested assistance in the implementation of Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Medair began supporting CMAM integrated within 10 Ministry of Health facilities in Abdi District of Ouaddai Region in May 2013, with treatment programmes for acutely malnourished children re-opening from early July 2013. Purpose of the Survey: Medair requires a Nutrition Survey using SMART methodology and cluster sampling to assess the nutritional status of the population of its project area in Abdi District, by collecting anthropometric and mortality data, measuring programme coverage, and investigating potential underlying causes of malnutrition, including key health, WASH and IYCF indicators. The purpose of the survey is to provide robust data, acceptable to the national nutrition cluster and to current and potential donors, in order to guide current implementation of nutrition programming and to support future expansion and funding applications. Qualifications, experience and skills required: The consultant will need to hold a public health or nutrition qualification and have extensive experience of similar surveys for interventions funded by international institutional donors. A strong proficiency in English is essential and French is highly desirable or otherwise a readiness to operate through a translator.
