Save the Children is seeking a consultant to carry out surveys in 4 IDP camps (Pauktaw, Sittwe, Nam Hkam - Shan State and May Ja Yang - Kachin States) to assess the current nutrition and food security situation. Job Purpose The consultant will be required to carry out 2 SMART nutrition surveys and one KAP survey. 1. A SMART Nutrition Survey in Kachin and Shan IDP camps to estimate the prevalence of acute malnutrition, chronic malnutrition and underweight in children. The survey will determine the coverage of immunization and micronutrient supplementation as well as estimate the retrospective morbidity, Crude and Under five Mortality rates (to be confirmed). The specifics of the survey and any additional data relating to WASH, FSL and Health can be finalised by the consultant in conjunction with the Humanitarian Team. 2. A KAP survey in Rakhine IDP camps covering: Antenatal care (ANC); maternal nutrition, pregnancy danger signs, ANC visits, pregnant mothers number of visits, micronutrient supplements, vaccination, issues related to delivery condition and assistance, knowledge of our ANC program, acceptability and accessibility Outpatient therapeutic care- OTP; understanding of malnutrition signs, knowledge on feeding programs- OTP, perception of malnutrition and program, understanding of malnutrition causes and the related problems. WASH/Hygiene; information on the Hygiene practices, hand wash, source of drinking water, treatment of water, water related diseases Health; malaria: transmission, vaccination and use of use of LLTN, HIV/AIDS knowledge or perception, diarrhoea, fever etc. Livelihood and food security; Source of food and income The specifics of the survey can be finalised by the consultant in conjunction with the Humanitarian Team. 3. To recommend appropriate interventions based on survey findings and context, stakeholder analysis Key Accountabilities • Design the survey methodology, and develop comprehensive tools for data collection according to SMART guideline and SCI previous surveys • Train data collectors and meet with various stakeholders at district level. • Organize adequate supervision and coordination of the survey teams in the field. Part of the survey area will probably not be accessible by the consultant and the team need therefore to be highly autonomous and reliable. • Presentation of preliminary findings to the DSGs at the district level as required. • Manage the survey budgets and financial reporting • Data entry, data analysis and compilation of a comprehensive SMART survey report. • Prepare and submit final survey report and the data sets to SCI in soft and hard copy. • Any other tasks as required by the Nutrition Adviser or Humanitarian Manager. Person Specification • Degree in Nutrition/ Public Health/ Epidemiology or other relevant technical areas. Advanced degree preferred. • Strong experience in SMART surveys • Knowledge of ENA delta for SMART and EpiInfo, SPSS or STATA required. • Excellent analytical and report writing skills. • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach staff • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions • Prepared to live and work in an uncertain security environment • Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay at the field • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles • Demonstrable ability at report writing and excellent communication skills • Computer literacy • Fluency in written and spoken English Desirable: • Awareness and understanding of WASH, food security and livelihoods programming options and other generic programming options for addressing the underlying causes of malnutrition • Experience and/or an interest in working in Asian Countries.
